Campuswide fire equipment inspections notice

Submitted by Steven Galitzer

Over the next few weeks you will notice employees of SimplexGrinnell on campus walking through our buildings. We have hired them as an improvement to our inspection program for emergency fire equipment. For now they will be inspecting our fire suppression, or sprinkler, systems and fire alarm systems. Fire suppression systems require monthly, quarterly and annual testing. Departments will be notified prior to quarterly and annual testing. K-State staff will continue to inspect fire extinguishers, exit signs and emergency lights.

Fire alarm systems will be inspected at night after 10 p.m. to reduce the number of people affected or annoyed by the sounding of alarms. Departments will be notified in advance of these inspections to warn personnel who work at night in the effected buildings. Fire alarms require an annual test to ensure all pull stations, smoke detectors, heat detector and fire panels are in working order.

Monthly fire extinguisher inspections will be conducted by Division of Public Safety staff at night as well. Exit signs and emergency lights will be inspected by our staff during the day. I have asked our staff to be as unobtrusive as possible when inspecting exit signs and emergency lights. Please bear with us as we change our inspection program to satisfy the requirements of the International Fire Code. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at safety@k-state.edu or 785-532-5856.
