Getting the buzz: Social media pro to teach seminar for students, faculty and staff
Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest -- everyone is on, but do these social media work for business? Kansas State University students, faculty and staff will learn the skills to develop a media strategy that makes social media work for business, during a four-hour seminar presented by Susan Young of Get in Front Communications.
"Get the Buzz: How to Use Social Media to Succeed in Business" will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, in the Flint Hills Room at the K-State Student Union.
Young is the president of Get in Front Communications Inc. and has numerous media awards, including being named one of the "75 Badass Women on Twitter."
"I am pleased and excited that we are able to offer a program to our students that will develop skills they need to be successful in the workforce," said Dawn Deeter-Schmelz, director of the National Strategic Selling Institute at Kansas State University's College of Business Administration. "She has developed an innovative workshop that will teach attendees how to develop a cohesive strategic and tactical plan for online business development."
The seminar is sponsored by Security Benefit, Topeka. Inland Label, La Crosse, Wis., is sponsoring the program's luncheon.
Deeter, who is a professor of marketing and the JJ Vanier distinguished chair of relational selling and marketing, knows of the importance of a solid social media strategy firsthand.
"Twitter has changed my life," she said. After using the site for several months she has met marketing professionals from around the country, and made connections that are already making an impact in her classroom.
"Social media is more than play or time-wasting, but professionals need to have a solid strategy to be able to make good use out of these platforms. This is where Young's expertise becomes valuable to our future business professionals."
After the seminar Young will visit Deeter's sales management class via webcam six times this semester to assist students in a social media project, including writing blog posts on sales and sales management.
"This is going to be an outstanding learning experience that integrates the academic environment with real-world business practices," Deeter said.
