K-State cares: Services available for students in crisis

Submitted by Cliff Rone

Unfortunately, it is common that K-State students experience a crisis or know someone who experiences a crisis while in college. A crisis could include thoughts or intentions of killing yourself/suicide, thoughts or intentions of harming someone else, being unable to care for yourself, or the death of a loved one. If you or any K-State student you know experiences a crisis please refer them to the following resources for help.

Counseling Services is a student resource available to provide mental health services to the K-State Manhattan student body. The licensed professional staff — e.g., licensed psychologists, licensed professional counselor — are trained and available to help students in these types of crises. Students in crisis can walk into Counseling Services from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or they can be escorted to Counseling Services by a university staff, faculty member, student or a family member.

Counseling Services also has an after hours number, 785-532-6927, that is available for K-State students to utilize anytime they need to talk to a mental health professional outside of regular business hours. For more information about the resources Counseling Services provides for students in crisis please visit their website.

The Office of Student Life is another helpful resource for students who have experienced a crisis that is in some way affecting their academics. Please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Student Life to talk with a dean who can help you understand the resources at your disposal to assist you in navigating your difficult time. The Office of Student Life also has after hours services available through their after hours line, 785-532-6432. For more information about the services provided by the Office of Student Life please visit their website.

Lastly, if you know of a student experiencing issues who is not able or willing to seek assistance, please complete the student of concern reporting form so that a helpful university staff member can contact the student and ensure they get referred to the beneficial resources that exist for them.
