Kansas Board of Regents March meeting agenda items

Submitted by Cindy Bontrager

Dear Campus Community,

The Kansas Board of Regents will meet March 15 at the Curtis State Office Building in Topeka. The board will consider the following agenda items during the meeting.

The Regents will receive the annual report on the accreditation status of the state universities and various programs within each that have specialized accreditation. Each university is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Kansas State University reported 49 programs accredited by licensed, approved, certified or registered specialization bodies.

The Regents will approve the performance reports for academic year 2015. The current performance agreements cover academic years 2014-2016. Each institution developed indicators that support Foresight 2020 and established a baseline for each indicator. To be eligible for any new funding appropriated, each institution annually submits a report updating the board on its progress toward meeting each of the indicators in its performance agreement. K-State qualifies for 100 percent of any new funding for which we are eligible.

Kansas State University requests approval to offer market-based courses to nondegree students at flexible market-based tuition rates. Any academic college or campus may partner with corporations, nonprofits and school districts to address their workforce development needs. Courses for specific categories of professionals may be designed and priced to meet their career advancement needs. While the courses will be offered as nondegree, a department or college may develop a plan for degree-seeking students to incorporate the courses into their academic plans.

The Regents will approve the charge to the First Generation Task Force and appoint members to serve on the task force. During the February meeting, the board created the new task force to focus on how to reach, enroll and retain first-generation college students. Regents Shane Bangerter and Ann Brandau-Murguia and Blake Flanders, president and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents, have agreed to serve on the task force pending appointment by the board. A list of additional appointments will be presented during the meeting.

The Regents will receive highlights of the annual enrollment report which examines trends in Kansas public higher education. The full report will be available online and many of the data points are available in the Kansas Higher Education Reporting System.

The Regents will receive an update from Randy Watson, Kansas commissioner of education, on the work being accomplished by the State Board of Education and their new vision for education in Kansas. The new K-12 vision aligns with the work being accomplished by the board and Watson will share work on the continued alignment of the vision for K-12 and higher education.

The Regents will receive an update on the 2017 Legislative session. The Legislature has passed the "turnaround" date and is now in the second half of the regular session. An update on the status of the budget and tax proposals as well as the nonbudgetary legislative items will be provided.

If you have any questions about these agenda items, please contact me at cab@k-state.edu or 785-532-6226. The meeting will be streamed live online. For live updates on all Kansas Board of Regents meetings follow @ksregents on Twitter. Agendas and complete meeting minutes also are available online.
