Engineering team announced as national finalists in student competition

Submitted by David Fritchen

An unprecedented level of success has been demonstrated by a team of 20 architectural engineering and construction science students who have been announced as national finalists in all five categories of the Amercan Society of Civil Engineers Charles Pankow Foundation Architectural Engineering Student Competition.

Architectural engineering student teams from across the country submitted entries in the following five categories: structural, mechanical, electrical, construction and integrated building systems, and three finalists were selected in each of the five categories. K-State's team is the only team in the nation to ever rank as a national finalist in all five categories.

The annual competition is run by the Architectural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. All finalists will present their team engineering designs to a panel of judges that consists of industry leaders in engineering and construction on Friday, April 20, at the Architectural Engineering Institute National Student Conference in Omaha, Neb.

Team members include: Marshall Frey and Noe Turrubiartes, both seniors in construction science and management; Marc Bowser, Vince Pianalto, Laura Boddington and John Dean, all seniors in architectural engineering; Eric Grusenmeyer, Josh Heath, Reid Lundin and Becky Gentry, all concurrent bachelor's and master's students in architectural engineering.

Advisers include: Ray Yunk, associate professor of architectural engineering and construction science; and Don Phillippi, Russ Murdock and Ray Buyle, all assistant professors of architectural engineering and construction science.

In the third year of the competition, K‐State has emerged as the most successful architectural engineering program in the nation, with 11 of 45 national finalists and four of 10 national championships to date
