Vernon Larson Lecture: Peace Corps Spotlight on Paraguay Sept. 20

Submitted by Mary K. Pyle

Join the Office of International Programs for the next Vernon Larson Lecture on Peace Corps Spotlight on Paraguay from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Berney Family Welcome Center.

K-State's Peace Corps Representative, the Office of International Programs, College of Agriculture/K-State Research and Extension and the Career Center will present a compelling overview of how the Peace Corps operates in Paraguay.

Leslie Ann Bassett, U.S. ambassador to Paraguay, will open the session via a video message. The Paraguayan Peace Corps volunteers will share their in-country experiences and the K-State Paraguayan Student Association will give a 10-minute overview about their country and their engagement with the Peace Corps.

Vernon Larson's daughter, Linnea Allen, and granddaughter, Rebekah Allen, also will share some of their reflections about Larson, the man whom the signature Vernon Larson Lecture Series is named.

Rebekah Carnes, K-State's Peace Corps representative, will moderate the session. Carnes served the Peace Corps as an HIV/AIDS Volunteer in Botswana, Africa, from 2013 to 2015. She assisted the Ministry of Health in developing a monitoring and evaluation strategy to respond to the growing crisis with evidence-based programming. Carnes worked in grant writing, IT training for healthcare professionals and youth development to address gender based violence — the leading driver of HIV in Botswana.
