Medical Interpreting Workshop accepting applications

The modern languages department will host a 40-hour health care interpreting workshop "Bridging the Gap," presented by Jewish Vocational Services of Kansas City, Aug. 8-12, in 001A Eisenhower Hall.

The workshop is open to participants who have a high school diploma and have intermediate proficiency or higher in English and at least one other language.

Workshop objectives include: 

1. Apply the Interpreter's Code of Ethics. 
2. Demonstrate the appropriate roles of an interpreter.
3. Demonstrate the modes of interpreting.
4. Demonstrate cultural competency practices.
5. Identify medical terms.

Participants will take a final exam on the last day of class. Forty hours of training are a prerequisite for pursuing national medical interpreter certification. The fee for the workshop is $500.
