Submitted by Dave Procter

The Center for Engagement and Community Development and the department of landscape architecture and regional and community planning at Kansas State University are hosting the 2012 Engagement Symposium, "A Day of Learning: Communities Engaging Landscape."

The symposium will be April 26 in the Flinthills Room and Room 212 at the K-State Student Union. The event is open to the public and is free of charge. Students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to attend to learn more about how communities are using landscape to promote learning and community development.

Participants will hear from professionals and researchers on how communities are engaging in landscape to meet diverse needs. Participants will be able to bring back practical knowledge and ideas to implement in their communities and organizations.

Robin Moore, director of the National Learning Initiative at North Carolina State University, will give the keynote address to start the day. Moore is a preeminent scholar in landscape for children. He has authored numerous articles and books, including "Natural Learning."

Following Moore’s address, participants can choose to attend sessions by K-State professors and community leaders from Kansas and Missouri. Break-out session topics include Engaging Communities through Gardens, Learning Gardens, Community Gardens and Well Being, and Growing Food and Social Systems.
