Plan to celebrate spring safely

Submitted by Office of Student Life

Warm weather, spring break and Fake Patty’s day all seem to be especially early this year!  Don’t be caught unprepared – the office of student life wants to help you plan to safely and responsibly enjoy spring and all that it has to offer.

Whatever your plans are, remember to take care of yourself and others.

  • Use the buddy system! It worked in third grade, and it's still a good idea.
  • Make a plan ahead of time, including a check-in time and location.
  • Accept only beverages that are closed or that you have observed being filled.
  • Drink plenty of nonalcoholic beverages and remember to eat!
  • Drink alcohol only if you are 21 or older.
  • If you do choose to drink, drink in moderation – only one alcoholic drink or less per hour.
  • Travel safely. Use SafeRide  and Wildcat Walk.

Safety is a shared responsibility. Look out for one other. Step in to help when necessary. Learn how to protect yourself and look out for others with the Stay Safe 360 video series, available at https://www.k-state.edu/360/ to anyone with a K-State eID and password.

If you plan to participate in Fake Patty’s Day activities, take the following into consideration:

  • All laws are enforced on Fake Patty’s Day, and the police will be out in full strength to ensure that it is a safe day for all.
  • In addition to heightened presence in Aggieville and the surrounding area, law enforcement personnel will be conducting checks of house parties throughout the city.
  • Be careful – not everyone who is out celebrating is doing so responsibly and, in fact, some use this as an opportunity to commit unsafe and illegal acts. Stay away from overcrowded areas and avoid disorderly parties and unruly gatherings.

Safety has become an issue. Last year more than 1,000 citations were issued for Fake Patty's Day – almost double from the year before. Go to http://www.ci.manhattan.ks.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1054 for more information from the city of Manhattan and Riley County Police Department.

Don’t be a silent bystander and allow yourself or another K-Stater to become a statistic. Report crimes to the Silent Witness offered by K-State University Police Department or the Manhattan/Riley County Crimestoppers.

Stay safe, K-State!
