Cooking essentials classes: For your health, budget and the environment

The office of sustainability's healthy food intern will be offering a series of classes to teach students and anyone else who is interested in learning more about cooking, budgeting, storing foods and eating healthy.

Class 1: Budgeting for, Purchasing and Storing Food
Tuesday, Feb. 28, 5:30-7 p.m., or Monday, April 2, 6-7:30 p.m.

Do you ever feel like every time you go grocery shopping you come home with foods that are either unhealthy or impulse buys that you will never eat? This class will teach you the basics of budgeting to ensure you get healthy, good quality food without spending too much money as well as how to read food labels. You will also learn how to store produce in order to promote quality, taste and longevity. This class aims to provide you with the tools be able to eat healthy and make the most of what you purchase while maintaining a budget.

Class Two: Cooking Techniques 
Thursday, March 1, 7-9 p.m., or Tuesday, April 3, 6-8 p.m.

This class will be a demonstration type course that will teach you the skills to be able to not only read recipes but also how to improvise your own dishes with ingredients you have on hand. Things you will learn include knife skills, how to make different doughs – bread, pasta, etc. – blanching, broiling, making your own sauce, how to make a good salad dressing and much more! There is $3 registration fee that will be used to buy ingredients and you will get to taste everything we cook.

Class 3: Choosing and Using Healthy Foods
Tuesday, March 6, 5:30-7 p.m.. or Monday, April 9, 6-7:30 p.m.
There is an insane amount of marketing coming at us everyday telling us what to eat to be healthy and it can get overwhelming. This class will explain how to find the right balance between all the concepts that are circulating. It will teach you which fats are the best to use, how to utilize lean cuts of meat, how to create delicious vegetarian dishes, the difference between good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates, provide sample menus and much more. Most importantly, this class will focus on the basic lifestyle changes that create healthy habits that benefit your body and the environment.
