Biotechnology Core Facility volunteer opportunity

Submitted by Mandy Cole

The Biotechnology Core Facility is looking for an undergraduate researcher to repair vacuum systems for our mass spectrometry facility. The student will receive hands-on training and learn a valuable set of industrially relevant skills.

The student must be very attentive to detail and able to lift more than 100 pounds. Previous experience fixing trucks/tractors will be helpful in learning this new skill set. Experience with vacuum systems and compressors a plus but can train.

Daily tasks will include the use and repair of the following equipment:
1. Mass spectrometers, both MALDI/TOF and ESI/MS systems;
2. High vacuum systems including rough pump rebuilds;
3. Vacuum distillation;
4. Super critical fluid extraction;
5. High pressure liquid chromatography;
6. Nitrogen generation; and
7. Industrial spray drying.
