Results from police satisfaction survey

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

This spring the Kansas State University Police Department and the planning and analysis department conducted a K-State Police Department satisfaction survey with various members of the K-State community.

"This survey was to measure the effectiveness of our commitment to the public safety of our community here at Kansas State University," said Ronnie Grice, assistant vice president for public safety.

The results showed an overall satisfaction — 86.7 percent — that calls or concerns were handled in a professional manner. Personal safety perception also was measured, and all students and employees rated safety at 77.2 percent.

Two areas that were found to be most important to the Kansas State University community were bicycle patrol and walking patrols. Due to officer reductions some of those patrols are difficult.

"These are the areas where the visibility of our police department is important," Grice said. "By adding more officers, these community expectations can be met. We understand the community's expectations and have requested more staff in officers, security and communications."

The survey also showed that 80 percent of respondents have not used Wildcat Walk, a free service to all of the Kansas State University community. The Wildcat Walk will provide users a free walking escort to their vehicle, residence hall or apartment up to two blocks off campus. The police department encourages the use of this free service.

The areas identified throughout the survey and general concerns by our community will be evaluated. Comments by respondents, such as areas of safety concern, lighting and extra patrols in various buildings, will all be part the department’s ongoing effort to provide the best service to the community.
