Guide to Personal Success program reaches record mentee enrollment, mentors needed
The Guide to Personal Success, or GPS, program matches first-year students with campus professionals for a one-on-one mentoring relationship to create strong campus community and increase first-year engagement.
Since its inception in 2009, it has served more than 1,400 students and it continues to grow each year. This year is no exception, with a record 186 enrolled guides, or mentors, and 386 mentees. Total enrollment will likely hit 600 later this week.
"The interest in the GPS program this year has been overwhelming. We are thrilled that so many students see the benefit of making connections on campus and tapping into the skills and wisdom of K-State professionals," said Lauren Edelman, program coordinator.
Because of the high interest in the program, approximately 100 students remain on a waiting list until additional guides can be secured.
The program has been proven to benefit mentees and guides alike.
"The GPS program is the best thing K-State could do for first-year students. I'm glad I have someone I can trust to be a great resource and friend on campus," said Taylor Harmon, an English major and Guide to Personal Success mentee.
Not only is the program beneficial for students, it is rewarding for guides as well.
"The GPS program organizes fun events that offer me a chance to catch up with my mentees at locations on campus that I might not otherwise carve out time to visit," said Sarah Hoyt, an undergraduate specialist at Hale Library and Guide to Personal Success guide. "Getting to know the students and getting to know K-State's amenities makes being a GPS mentor doubly rewarding."
The program requires a minimal time-commitment each semester, encouraging guides to meet face-to-face with mentees at least three times per semester. The program will provide monthly Connect events that guides and mentees may attend together, but these events are optional. Each guide and mentee relationship is different, as this program allows a unique and personalized mentoring opportunity for everyone involved.
