Kansas Campus Compact announces Kanost as engaged faculty fellow

By Josh Mosier

Kansas Campus Compact is announcing the selection of three distinguished faculty members from Kansas colleges as 2013 engaged faculty fellows. Beginning Aug. 1, the selected individuals will serve a one-year term as part of a cohort from across the state. Each of these individuals will receive a $6,000 grant to support their efforts to integrate service learning and civic engagement into their teaching and research.

The 2013 engaged faculty fellows are Laura Kanost, associate professor of Spanish at Kansas State University; Anna Page, assistant professor of dietary and hospitality management at Johnson County Community College; and Carrie Lane, associate professor of psychology at Southwestern College.

Kanost has taught a variety of language, literature and culture courses in Spanish and strives to help her students gain confidence and motivation by using their skills in meaningful ways both inside and outside of the classroom. She has taught Spanish conversation through service learning for 10 semesters and recently led a new freshman learning community linking Spanish, leadership studies and service learning experiences both locally and abroad.

Entering its third year, the engaged faculty program serves as a faculty professional development model to support the integration of service learning and community engagement into the three components of faculty development: teaching, research and service. The fellows will work as a team to develop a research project to enhance and advance the field of service learning and community engagement.

Headquartered at the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas Campus Compact is a coalition of 13 higher education institutions committed to strengthening integration of civic service and community engagement into the higher educational experience throughout Kansas.
