Art instructor completes artist-in-residence program at Oregon college

Submitted by Nelson Smith

Nelson Smith

Nelson Smith, instructor of art, recently completed a six-week residency as senior artist-in-residence in drawing and painting at Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Ore.

Smith was selected as one of three senior artist residencies through a national peer-review process. Supported by the Collins Foundation, the college's senior artist-in-residence program brings national mid-career artists to the Oregon College of Art and Craft, providing them with the time, resources and equipment to push their work in new directions while interacting with students, faculty and the Portland arts community at-large.

Using the three fault lines that run through the city, Smith composed a visual vocabulary with graphic schematic diagrams based on geological maps and interviews with Portland residents. The acrylic paintings on birch plywood panels will be exhibited in the Hoffman Gallery at the college opening Oct. 6.
