Chuck Rice

Chuck Rice, university distinguished professor of agronomy and 2011 president of the Soil Science Society of America, participated in the launch of the Global Soil Partnership, Sept. 7-9, at the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The partnership's mission is to support and facilitate joint efforts toward sustainable management of soil resources for food security and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

“There is increasing awareness that soils have a central role to play in assuring food security and in climate change adaptation and mitigation,” Rice said. “There is an urgent need for better coordination and partnership among the many ongoing projects, initiatives and partnerships in order to make the most efficient use of resources.”

The partnership will aim toward collaboration and sharing of responsibilities to provide a coherent framework for joint strategies and actions, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization.
