Writing seminar hosted by the agricultural economics department

Submitted by Amanda Erichsen

The agricultural economics department will host the writing seminar titled "Clear Sentences" at 3 p.m. Friday, April 26, in 328 Waters Hall.

Bob Reagan, a retired technical editor at the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank, is presenting a seminar about how to write well. This seminar is primarily geared toward graduate students and faculty members in agricultural economics and economics. However, all are welcome to attend.

Today's readers are busy people with little time or patience for articles that are difficult to read. To hold readers from beginning to end, a writer must write clearly. Clear writing is not a mysterious art; it is a mechanical process, a craft that follows a clear set of principles and can be learned.

Similar to woodworkers who gain skill by honing their tools and practicing their craft, writers can develop the skill to produce sentences that are both easy to read and easy to write. The "Clear Sentence" seminar discusses 10 basic principles toward this end.

Participants should bring something to write on, pencil and paper or computer, as well as any questions about rules of writing.
