Happy Birthday to us: New ice cream flavor celebrates university's 150th

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

What's a birthday without ice cream and cake?

The traditional birthday treats will play a special role in Kansas State University's sesquicentennial celebration in 2013. The Call Hall dairy bar, which features university-made ice cream, is adding a new flavor to its ice cream selections in honor of the university's 150th -- and it lets you enjoy cake with the ice cream, too.

Named "Wildcat Birthday 150," this new flavor will be featured throughout the nine-month 150th celebration in 2013, including at the 150th kickoff celebration, Feb. 14-17.

The idea for a special ice cream for the 150th celebration was introduced by the university's sesquicentennial steering committee because Call Hall ice cream is recognized as a tasty tradition on campus. Under development since September 2012, the ice cream was created at the Dairy Processing Plant, which was charged with coming up with a new flavor that incorporates the school color of royal purple.

"Wildcat Birthday 150" is a white ice cream with a cake batter-based flavoring added to it, said Jared Parsons, manager of the Dairy Processing Plant. Actual birthday cake pieces are added to the mix, and it's all topped with royal purple sprinkles.

"We are very happy with the flavor and are excited to have people giving it a try," Parsons said.

The ice cream is already available at the Call Hall dairy bar and will be served throughout the 150th celebration in 2013. Parsons said to not miss your chance to give it a try, as "Wildcat Birthday 150" will be discontinued at the start of 2014.
