K-State School of Music, Theatre, and Dance faculty to conduct area youth orchestras

Submitted by Sandra Brase

David Littrell, university distinguished professor, and Kristin Mortenson, instructor of music theory and listening lab, will conduct 75 string students enrolled in grades 3-12 in the Gold and Silver orchestras.

Area residents have the opportunity to hear them perform at two concerts later this month:

  • 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in the Junction City Middle School Auditorium
  • 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in the McCain Auditorium at Kansas State University

Littrell founded the youth Gold Orchestra in 1989, which has influenced more than 350 students through the years. In August 2012, the precollege orchestra program divided into three orchestras with 90 students: Gold Orchestra, Silver Orchestra and Bronze Training Orchestra. The Gold Orchestra has performed across the country as well as abroad and will give its third performance at Carnegie Hall in 2014.
