A.Q. Miller School faculty showcase work at journalism education conference

Submitted by A.Q. Miller School of Journalism

Eight faculty members from the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications attended the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference from Aug. 9-12 in Chicago. The faculty also honored Todd Simon, a professor in the school who died last semester.

Professor Angela Powers hosted the memorial for Simon along with a colleague from Michigan State University, where Simon taught before coming to Kansas State University. About 50 of his colleagues and former students attended. K-State colleagues prepared a memorial book to present to his family, and faculty and former students shared remembrances.

At the conference, Powers moderated a discussion on media management for all conference attendees.

Sam Mwangi, Bonnie Bressers and Steve Smethers presented their research on Greensburg, Kan., at the conference. The faculty members authored the peer-reviewed paper "If You Build It, Will they Come? An Exploratory Study of Community Reactions to an Open Source Media Project in Greensburg, Kansas."

The association is a nonprofit organization of more than 3,700 students, educators, students and practitioners from around the world. Since the organization’s founding in 1912, the association has grown to be the oldest and largest alliance of journalism and mass communication educators and administrators at the college level.
