By jammin' with the performing arts, middle school girls get chance to grow interest in science, technology, engineering and more

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

More than 50 middle school girls will participate in Jammin' with the Arts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Kansas State University.

Jammin' with the Arts is organized by the GROW -- Girls Researching Our World -- program in the university's office for the advancement of women and science in engineering, or KAWSE. GROW is designed to introduce middle school girls to science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Jammin' with the Arts is the first GROW event this fall featuring activities developed through the collaborative efforts of faculty in these disciplines along with the university's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Kansas State University faculty and students will guide participants in hands-on activities exploring how artistic endeavors rely on science and engineering. The activities include "Physics of Sound," which demonstrates how waves travel through musical instruments to create sound. "The Science of Dance" uncovers how dance moves are created when the body moves in planes. Other activities help girls discover the beauty and creativity of the sciences and engineering fields.
