Students to present projects for final design review on Dec. 5 in K-State Student Union

Submitted by Mary Rankin

Students enrolled in ME 575 — Interdisciplinary Industrial Design Projects II, will finish off the semester with a full day in the K-State Student Union, where they will explain their design projects ranging from a method of resistance mapping for metal-additive manufactured parts sponsored by Sandia National Labs to a new mechanism for safely removing railcar covers sponsored by Cargill.

From 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, class members will display and present their work on the second floor of the Union. Each entry will be scored and judged by mechanical and nuclear engineering faculty members and company sponsors of the event. A poster session, also open to the public, will be from 12:30-3 p.m. in the Cottonwood Room.

A total of 16 teams, made up of 63 students, will take part in this final design review of the semester, with the top-scoring teams to be presented with plaques during an awards ceremony at 5 p.m. that day in the Big 12 Room. Winning team members' names and year of their award also will go onto a display board in the department of mechanical and nuclear engineering.

Zayd Leseman, associate professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, is the coordinator of the class, and solicits project sponsors and funding. Additional departmental faculty members — Mohammad Hosni, Warren White, Kevin Lease, Jason Clement and Mohammad Abdo — serve as advisors to the teams and meet with them for three hours twice a week.

The sponsoring companies — Garmin, Altec, Kiewit, Cargill, Unirac, Titus, Sandia National Laboratories, Ideal Vacuum, Vektek, Kansas City National Security Campus and Physical Home Defense — provide project ideas, funding and professional guidance throughout the semester.
