Four hospitality management students received second place in the Smith Travel Research, or STR, market competition, which was hosted Nov. 11 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. The team of students included Emma Bartlett, Christina Hoops, Kyle Hulsing and Dakota Nelson — all seniors in the lodging track.

The competition featured approximately 33 teams representing universities from around the world. The K-State team selected a Kansas City market to research and analyze market data.

This market study was a part of a research project in the Advanced Hotel Operations class. During the class, an internal competition was hosted to determine the best student team to represent K-State in New York. The selected K-State team was advised by Jichul Jang, assistant professor of hospitality management.

"I am very proud of our student team," Jang said. "This competition is a great opportunity for students to work with real market data and make a presentation in New York. I look forward to challenging new students in next year's event."
