College of Human Ecology offers new minors and certificates

Submitted by College of Human Ecology

The College of Human Ecology will offer three new minors and two new certificate options for students in spring 2019.

"We are excited to not only respond to the needs of employers and the interests of our students but also to shape the future of practice by offering these certificates and minors," said Bronwyn Fees, associate dean for academic affairs.

The food, nutrition, dietetics and health department will offer a nutrition minor and a health coach certificate.

The nutrition minor will provide enhanced nutrition content and experiences for health-focused students across the university. The courses are designed to complement more pre-health degrees at K-State. The nutrition minor requires 15 credit hours for completion. Core courses include FNDH132: Basic Nutrition; FNDH400: Human Nutrition; FNDH450: Nutritional Assessment; and FNDH340: Food and Health: Safety, Allergies and Intolerances or FNDH413: Science of Foods. Students will then choose two elective courses to round out the 15 hours. The minor is available to any undergraduate K-State student and is offered for both on campus and Global Campus students.

The health coach certificate will provide specific training to individuals seeking to work as a health coach. A health coach is someone who educates and mentors individuals, or small groups, to improve their health behaviors. Students will be required to complete 15 credit hours to earn their certificate. Core courses for this program include FNDH352: Personal Wellness; FNDH450: Nutritional Assessment; FNDH515: Counseling Strategies in Dietetic Practice; and PSYCH110: General Psychology. Students will then select one of the designated elective courses and will be required to also complete a practicum/internship experience.

The School of Family Studies and Human Services will offer a minor in personal financial planning and a minor in financial counseling along with a Kansas Insurance certificate.

The personal financial planning minor will provide students with an overview of the financial planning profession. Core courses include PFP105: Introduction to Personal Financial Planning and PFP305: Advanced Personal Financial Planning. Students will then select three personal financial planning electives to complete the program for a total of 15 hours. Nine of the 15 credit hours must be completed at K-State and a GPA of 2.50 is required.

The financial counseling minor will provide students with an overview of the content needed to serve as a financial counselor. Core courses include PFP105: Introduction to Personal Financial Planning; PFP305: Advanced Personal Financial Planning; PFP310: Family and Consumer Economics; and PFP456: Financial Counseling and Communication. Students will then need three elective credits to complete the 15 hours required. Nine of the 15 credit hours must be completed at K-State and a GPA of 2.50 is required.

The Kansas Insurance certificate will provide students with the requirements set forth by the Kansas Insurance Department. Students will be required to complete 12 credit hours to complete the certificate. Required courses include PFP105: Introduction to Personal Financial Planning; PFP305: Advanced Personal Financial Planning; and PFP466: Personal Risk Management and Insurance Planning. Students will then select one elective course to complete the certificate program.

Undergraduate minors provide students an opportunity to emphasize study in an area outside their major curriculum. Minors can be awarded upon or after being awarded a baccalaureate degree.
