Goodson, Sherbert present at NATE conference in England

Submitted by Patrice Scott

Todd Goodson, professor and chair of the department of curriculum and instruction, and Vicki Sherbert, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, recently presented at the National Association for the Teaching of English Conference, or NATE, at Aston University in Birmingham, England.

The title of their presentation was "The Rural Arts Day: Supporting Rural Students Through Place-based Writing and Composition, Music and Performance."

Sherbert said the presentation was based on Rural Arts Day events hosted in two Kansas schools. The experience allowed teacher candidates to engage with a diverse population of students through place-based writing, composition and performance.

"Our session led to discussions with teacher educators from around the world regarding challenges faced by rural schools and the need to prepare teacher candidates who will support students in remote areas," Sherbert said. "We were excited to make connections with international colleagues that will extend the conversation well beyond this conference."
