Music program recognizes students for excellence at annual Honors Recital and Awards Ceremony

Several Kansas State University students were named winners or received awards at the Music Program Honors Recital and Awards Ceremony, Saturday, April 28, at All Faiths Chapel. The music program is part of the university's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Undergraduate and graduate students competed for performance honors as part of the Honors Recital. Adjudicators included Paul Hunt, professor of music; David Woods, instructor of music; and Jennifer Edwards, professor emeritus of music.

Earning first place in the undergraduate division for his clarinet solo was Steven Robinson, senior in music education, Hutchinson, while Noah Lindquist, senior in applied music, Topeka, earned second place for his voice solo. Also competing in the undergraduate division were Cooper McGuire, senior in applied music, Gardner, voice solo; Abigail Huck, senior in music education, Hutchinson, flute solo; Audrey Pickering, freshman in applied music, Manhattan, organ solo; and Kelly Urschel, senior in applied music and communication sciences and disorders, Overland Park, voice solo.

In the graduate division, Oscar Vazquez Medrano, master's student in music, Mexico, was awarded first place for his piano solo, while Brittney Davis, master's student in music, Manhattan, earned second place for her saxophone solo. Also participating in the graduate division was Mitchell Jerko, master's student in music, St. Marys, Pennsylvania, with a voice solo.

Among the honors presented were special awards from Sigma Alpha Iota, the women's music fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a music fraternity for men. In addition, several scholarship and leadership awards also were presented, and new members were inducted into the university's chapter of Phi Kappa Lambda, a music honor society.

Award and scholarship recipients and Phi Kappa Lambda initiates included the following students:

• Ryan Moos, senior in music education, Clay Center, Pi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Stephanie Goering, December 2017 bachelor's graduate in music education, Ellinwood, Pi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Meredith Reid, August 2017 Master of Music graduate, Fort Scott, Phi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Kathryn Haffner, senior in music education, Hoxie, Pi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Abigail Huck, senior in music education, Hutchinson, the Lloyd W. Muir Memorial Music Scholarship.

• Steven Robinson, senior in music education, Hutchinson, Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award.

• Rachael Gros, master's student in music and December 2017 bachelor's graduate in music education, La Crosse, Pi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Jessica Brummel, senior in music education, Louisburg, Dick Mason Award for Music Education.

• Kirsten Votaw, senior in music education, Manhattan, Collegiate Award from Sigma Alpha Iota, the women's music fraternity.

• Meredith Casey, freshman in music education, Olathe, Outstanding Freshman Music Major award.

• Matthew Hiteshew, senior in music education, Olathe, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Scholastic Award and Collegiate Award. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is the music fraternity for men.

• Clayton Kistner, junior in secondary education-English, Shawnee, Kappa Kappa Psi Stan Finck Memorial Leadership Award.

• Sara Gift, senior in music education, Stafford, Scholastic Award from Sigma Alpha Iota, the women's music fraternity.

• Alex Wakim, senior in applied music, Wichita, Outstanding Graduating Senior Music Major and Pi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Lucas Johnson, master's student in music, Pacific, Missouri, Phi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Mitchell Jerko, master's student in music, St. Marys, Pennsylvania, Pi Kappa Lambda initiate.

• Madison Hines, junior in music education, San Antonio, Texas, Tau Beta Sigma Stan Finck Memorial Leadership Award and Outstanding Sophomore Music Major award.

• Oscar Vazquez Medrano, master's student in music, Mexico, Phi Kappa Lambda initiate.
