Chapman Center for Rural Studies to host open house

K-State's Chapman Center for Rural Studies celebrates with the Open House and Intern Showcase Thursday, April 19, and Friday, April 20.
The center's open house is celebrating several important milestones this week: becoming a Center of Excellence in the College of Art and Science, recent expansion into two new research rooms, and a retirement celebration for MJ Morgan for her more than 10 years as research director for the Chapman Center. The campus community is welcome to stop by the center for conversation with center staff and students and light refreshments.
At 11 a.m. on Friday, April 20, Amit Chakrabarti, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will announce the winners of the Chapman Center's Broughton Prize for best student paper and the Melvin Bruntzel Prize for outstanding support of the center's mission by a community member or organization. Recipients will receive a certificate and a cash award in recognition of their work in and support of the center.
A full schedule of student presentations is scheduled for Friday afternoon, including the history of local women's baseball teams, Kaw Indian subsistence patterns and the surprising links between one family's heirlooms and the Great Chicago Fire. Several interactive exhibits, films and poster presentations will be on view for walk-in visitors on Thursday, April 19, from 1-4 p.m. as well as all day Friday, April 20. A brand-new digital exhibit, "Middle Kansas," will make its debut at the open house. Two years in production, this touch screen exhibit features the work of more than a dozen students. Community members are encouraged to attend and learn more about the center's upcoming NEH initiative for small museums and historical societies.
