History professor publishes article on Russian propaganda

Submitted by Andrew Orr

History professor Andrew Orr has published "The Myth of the Black Sea Mutiny: Communist Propaganda, Soviet Influence, and the Re-Remembering of the Mutiny" in the March issue of French Hisotry.

The article explores how the Russian, and later Soviet, government use propaganda to shape the way people in France remembered the 1919 mutiny of French sailors assigned to support anticommunists forces in the Russian Civil War. Orr shows that, through a combination of misleading publications and constant reputation, Soviet propagandists succeeded in claiming credit for a mutiny that had little to do with the Communist Party and used the myth they created to manipulate French politics and consolidate their control over the French Communist Party in the 1920s.
