American ethnic studies professor invited to participate in decolonial feminism philosophy workshop

Submitted by Russell Norris

April Petillo, assistant professor in the American ethnic studies department, is among a dozen emerging scholars accepted to participate in the Feminist Decolonial Politics fourth annual thought workshop.

Each year participants, chosen via a competitive open application process across Canada and the U.S., intensively engage the work of a different senior scholar advancing decolonial feminist philosophical thought.

This year, Petillo will work intensively with the scholarship of Saidiay Hartman, author of "Lose Your Mother," 2007, and "Scenes of Subjection," 1997. Through participation in this May workshop, Petillo will engage with Hartman around her work and join a community of emerging experts on Hartman's work active in the fields of decolonial, queer and critical race theory. She also will join a group that has published broadly on the works of other contemporary feminist thinkers including Sara Ahmed, Trinh T. Minh-ha and Sylvia Wynter.
