College of Arts and Sciences hires Deborah Goins as instructional designer

Submitted by Chris Shumway

Following a national search, the College of Arts and Sciences has named Deborah Goins as its first collegewide instructional designer.

Goins will work with college faculty and staff to develop strategic directions for online programs, facilitate the development of quality computer mediated learning experiences, and support the assessment of learning outcomes. Goins identified specific goals that she hopes to achieve in this position, including making electronic content more accessible, exploring and exercising best practices for online learning at K-State, promoting outstanding student engagement, as well as achieving excellence in teaching for all online learners at K-State.

"We are delighted that Deborah is joining us to assist with current and future online offerings," said Amit Chakrabarti, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "We know she will also help us develop homegrown, niche courses to attract a wide variety of students, including international students, and others to address industry needs."

Goins joined Kansas State University in 1999, providing administrative support for the university post office and working as a senior administrative assistant for K-State Research and Extension in the agricultural economics department until 2006. After working with the Coldwell Banker Realty Group for several years, Goins rejoined K-State in 2010, working at the Information Technology Assistance Center Help Desk.

In 2013, Goins became lead Canvas trainer, organizing all training programs and schedules. She led functional training for instructors and staff through online, face-to-face and hybrid instruction models. Goins tracked the effectiveness of Canvas trainings, collaborated on future integration requirements, enhancement of end-user experience, and ran implementation and communication team meetings. During this time, Goins also served the department as a technical trainer for campuswide users and as an IT Help Desk supervisor.

Goins holds a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in information systems from Emporia State University. She earned her bachelor's degree from K-State and has an associate degree from Colby Community College.
