DOE money awarded to K-State College of Engineering

The department of mechanical and nuclear engineering at Kansas State University will receive more than $291,000 for research reactor upgrades and fellowships from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Simon Bolding, graduate student in nuclear engineering, has been awarded a three-year fellowship of $50,000 per year, plus $5,000 for travel. Jeff Geuther, university nuclear reactor facility manager, said the reactor facility at K-State, will receive $136,000 for control rod drives and airborne contaminant monitoring systems.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced the awards May 8. The money is a part of the energy department’s nuclear energy university program, or NEUP. Forty-six colleges and universities across the country will share in $47 million offered by the Department of Energy.
