Introducing the doctorate in leadership communication: A 2017 Leading Change Institute

Submitted by Tim Steffensmeier

Faculty of the Staley School of Leadership Studies, communications studies, and agricultural communications departments will introduce campus and community partners to the new Doctor of Philosophy in leadership communication through a Leading Change Institute, Sept. 20-22.

A public panel will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in Town Hall of the Leadership Building. Learn more about leading change, engaging communities and advancing communication through this program.

The interdisciplinary program builds on the work of communications studies, agricultural communications, and leadership studies to offer a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership communication. To share more about this program, and how it will contribute to the academic and community goals of the land-grant mission, four visiting scholars will join the campus community to share research, engage students in classes, and meet with faculty and administrators about national trends informing various components of this new doctoral program.

During this public presentation, visiting scholars will provide their perspective on leading change, engaging communities and advancing communication, while inviting those gathered to participate in building a shared understanding of partnership and community engagement. All faculty, staff and students who are interested in learning more about the program and who are committed to leading change through partnership, communication, and engagement are encouraged to attend.

The visiting scholars will include:

  • Scott Peters, a professor of development sociology at Cornell University, and former faculty director of Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life.
  • Jessica Jameson, a professor of communication at North Carolina State University and an engaged faculty fellow and affiliated faculty with the Institute for Nonprofit Research, Education, and Engagement.
  • Shah Hasan, a lifelong higher education administrator and faculty member at schools such as the College of Wooster, Ohio State University, Kansas State University, West Virginia University, Franklin University, Columbus State Community College, Otterbein University, Ohio Dominican University, Urbana University and most recently at Virginia International University. Hasan is a nationally recognized teacher, trainer and facilitator in the areas of leadership, change and transition, strategic planning and managing organizations.
  • Patti Clayton is a senior scholar, Center for Service and Learning, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; visiting scholar, Institute for Community and Economic Development, UNC-Greensboro; and visiting fellow, New England Resource Center for Higher Education. Her work focuses on building the capacity of individuals, units, institutions, and the field as a whole for scholarly community-engaged teaching and learning.

Learn more about these visiting scholars on the Staley School of Leadership Studies' website.

These conversations will continue as we prepare to launch the doctorate in leadership communication in fall 2018. Learn more about the Leading Change Institutes.
