New state of Kansas tax brackets

Submitted by Human Capital Services

K-State employees may have noticed a difference in their net income due to changes in state tax withholdings. New income tax rates for tax year 2017 are 2.9 percent, 4.9 percent and 5.2 percent.

On June 7, the Kansas Legislature voted to overturn Gov. Sam Brownback's veto of Senate Bill 30. The bill's provisions, which introduce comprehensive state income tax reform, now become law and has been implemented retroactively effective Jan. 1, 2017. The bill was introduced to remedy looming budget deficits, and its passing repeals the income tax exemption on small business income, increases and expands tax rates over the next two years, and reinstates certain itemized deductions.

This expansion implements an additional tax bracket from the previous two-tier system of 2.7 percent and 4.6 percent.
