The Flint Hills Publications Workshop, an intense three-day learning lab for students involved in their schools’ journalism staffs, will be Sunday, July 16, through Tuesday, July 18, on the Manhattan campus.

One of the featured speakers is Emily Smith, the Pittsburg journalism adviser who, along with the Pittsburg High School The Booster Redux newspaper staff, reported that the school's new principal inflated some accomplishments and invented others. The result changed the school board's mind and gave the young Kansas journalists national attention.

Smith, who will lead workshop attendees in media management instruction, will deliver her address at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 17, in 106 Kedzie Hall. The K-State community is invited to attend.

In its 67th year, the workshop offers instruction in news and sports reporting, web design, photojournalism and more.

"The best part of the workshop is when the students get to know each other and start sharing ideas," said Kelly Glasscock, the workshop director. "That’s one of the best ways they learn."

The training sessions are led by experienced educators and media professionals, including two from the faculty of the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Sara Quinn, the R.M. Seaton chair of professional journalism and the president of the Society of News Design, will teach graphic design and visual communications, while Drew Smith, news director at K-State's Channel 8 News and an Emmy-award winning sports reporter, offers a track in video production and editing.

The Flint Hills Publications Workshop is a program offered by Collegian Media Group, the nonprofit corporation that publishes The Collegian, Royal Purple and Manhappenin'.
