Race and communication scholar to speak at Communication Studies and JMC Research Colloquium

By Nina Marino

Professor Chris Brown

Christopher Brown, associate professor of communication studies at Minnesota State University, Mankato, will present a talk to conclude the spring series of the Communication Studies and JMC Research Colloquium.

Brown will present, "Driven by Fear and Emancipated by Curiosity: The Politics of Bodily Knowledge in Personal Narratives on Race," at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, 106 Kedzie Hall.

Before arriving at Minnesota State, Brown was a postdoctoral research fellow at Ohio State University, where he published research on race and communication. In his work, Brown integrates philosophical work on race and critical race theories into understanding systems of privilege and institutional racism. Specifically, Brown critically engages the lived experiences of people of color navigating the politics and struggles of identity negotiation.

Brown's research has appeared in academic journals such as the Communication Monographs, Howard Journal of Communications, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Media Psychology, and Departures in Critical Qualitative Research.

This talk is supported by the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity Lecture Series Grant, and sponsored by the communication studies department and the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
