Re:                  New Credit Hour Definition and Course Scheduling Guidelines

Recently, the Faculty Senate added a section on course scheduling to the University Handbook. This section provides guidelines on how to determine how much contact time and outside of class effort is required for each credit hour. As guidelines are, there is flexibility and room for faculty discretion that will be related to the nature of the discipline and the course level.

For the text of University Handbook Section F115 please visit: http://www.k-state.edu/academicpersonnel/fhbook/fhsecf.html.

The Faculty Senate also offered the text for a new section that I agreed to include in the Department Heads Manual. This section provides additional detail and instructions on how to implement the new credit hour definition. The new Course Scheduling page of the Department Heads Manual may be accessed at: http://www.k-state.edu/academicpersonnel/depthead/contents.html

I have asked Brian Niehoff to answer questions regarding Course Scheduling and Credit Hour Definition. You may contact him at niehoff@k-state.edu or 785-532-4797.
