Humanities and social sciences RSCAD task force created

By Noelle Blood

Amit Chakrabarti, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has formed a task force to examine the current state of Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities, and Discovery, or RSCAD, in the fields of humanities and social sciences within the college.

The group's objective is to provide the dean with a report detailing:

1. The fields' existing strengths in RSCAD.

2. Potential opportunities for interdisciplinary RSCAD with other college departments and/or university STEM departments.

3. Targeted resources the college might use to advance the fields' RSCAD efforts — such as internal grants, travel funding, or additional college personnel to assist with proposal writing.

4. Suggestions to integrate RSCAD funding into the departmental culture of both the humanities and social sciences.

The task force is being chaired by Louise Benjamin, associate dean for academic affairs in the college. The task force members are:

  • Carlos Castellanos, assistant professor, Department of Art.
  • Colene Lind, assistant professor, Department of Communication Studies.
  • Lance Bachmeier, associate professor, Department of Economics.
  • Cameron Leader-Picone, assistant professor, Department of English
  • Marcellus Caldas, director, international research and faculty collaboration, Office of International Programs.
  • Jean Folkerts, interim director, A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
  • Necia Chronister, assistant professor, Department of Modern Languages.
  • Anna Marie Wytko, associate professor, School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.
  • Scott Tanona, associate professor, Department of Philosophy.
  • Emizet Kisangani, professor, Department of Political Science.
  • Matthew Sanderson, associate professor, Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work.
  • Valerie Padilla Carroll, assistant professor, Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.
  • TBD, Department of American Ethnic Studies.

The task force's report will be completed by the end of the spring 2017 semester.
