York University professor to present colloquium today

Submitted by Reta McDermott

Ilijas Farah, professor of mathematics as York University in Ontario, will present a colloquium at 2:30 p.m. today in 122 Cardwell Hall.

Farah's colloquium is titled, "Necessary Applications of Set Theory in Functional Analysis."

Operator algebras and abstract set theory were once considered to be only superficially related, but exciting connections and deep theorems have been discovered during the last few years. Farah will discuss applications of set theory to operator algebras, both necessary and 'unnecessary' ones.

This lecture is supported in part by the Advanced Distinguished Lecture series.
