Universitywide advising syllabus available

Submitted by Steven Dandaneau

A new universitywide advising syllabus is available for use by all advisors.

The document was created by a group of volunteers that included Sarah Buchanan, psychological sciences; Zac Malcolm, pre-health advising; Caroline Skov, College of Business Administration; Kelly Briggs, College of Education; Olga Lease College of Engineering; and Beth Stuewe, School of Family Studies and Human Services.

Special thanks to Stuewe and Sarah Buchanan for leading the effort, and to Charlie Nutt, executive director of NACADA, who provided expert consultation throughout the yearlong development and vetting process.

The advising syllabus includes K-State's learning outcomes and describes the advisor's role in helping students regularly achieve them. Whether faculty, primary role, or some combination, advisors are teachers, mentors, guides, resource and curriculum experts, and, of course, student advocates.

The advising syllabus was created to be easy to use and includes the option for colleges and departments to create their own supplemental syllabus elements. What's more, a Student Success Checklist identifies annual as well as semester-by-semester steps, which students should complete in order to stay on course for graduation and maximally benefit from the many opportunities available to enrich their undergraduate educations.

The university advising syllabus was formally adopted by the University Advising Committee at its Sept. 13 meeting. It is now available for use by any K-State advisor and can be accessed at the K-State advising website.
