Kansas Board of Regents June 15 meeting university updates

The monthly Kansas Board of Regents meeting on June 15 included several items related to Kansas State University.
Interim President Richard Myers
The Regents introduced interim President Richard Myers and welcomed him to his first Regents meeting as interim president.
Land agreement
Kansas State University received authorization to amend the legal description of the land in a lease agreement with the Kansas Wheat Commission. In 2010, the university entered into a 50-year renewable lease with the commission to construct the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center on 2.5 acres of land north of Kimball Avenue. The commission recently received a grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce to construct additional greenhouse facilities at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center.
University Security Executive Committee
The board adopted an updated resolution to incorporate a recent change to the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual, and named interim President Richard Myers and Vice President for Research Peter Dorhout to the University Security Executive Committee. The updated resolution adds new members to the executive committee, incorporates the new reporting changes that are now required by the operating manual and provides that the management control and authority resides in a Security Executive Committee comprised of the university’s interim president, provost, vice president for research and facility security officer. In support of the Biosecurity Research Institute project, the board first adopted a resolution of this nature in March 2009. The resolution was most recently updated in September 2015.
Tuition
The Regents approved revised fiscal year 2017 tuition and fees. Read the tuition rate message from the Kansas Board of Regents.
Kansas State University’s revised tuition rate is a 5.8 percent increase for the Manhattan, Polytechnic and Olathe campuses.
In May, the university proposed a 5 percent tuition increase for full-time undergraduate and graduate students. The revenue generated from the additional 0.8 percent rate increase will be used to offset the difference in the state general fund reductions of 4 percent prorated on the total budget allotted by the governor and the 3 percent reduction implemented in fiscal year 2016.

Capital improvement request
The Regents approved a five-year plan of capital improvements. Some of K-State’s requested improvements include renovations to Seaton Hall, the K-State Student Union expansion and the Chilled Water Plant and distribution project.

Presidential search
The Regents approved the K-State presidential advertisement and university profile. The key characteristics of the next president were developed after a May 24 open session with faculty and staff and representatives from Academic Search.
The Regents also approved adding John Buckwalter, dean of the College of Human Ecology, to the search committee for the new president. Buckwalter will replace a committee member who withdrew.
