Submitted by Rosanna Vail

Kansas State University Global Campus presented awards to university faculty, staff and students at the 2016 K-State Global Campus Honors and Awards Reception May 4.

Patrice Lyon, online food science master's student from Pullman, Washington, received the Extraordinary Student Award. This award is given to a currently enrolled distance student who has overcome obstacles in his or her educational path and demonstrates academic excellence, focus and career ambition.

Lyon has triumphed over many physical and academic struggles throughout her life, finding success and support in her online program and other opportunities at K-State. She serves as a student representative for the Institute of Food Technologists and is a mentor for the K-State First Program.

Richard Rosenkranz, associate professor in the food, nutrition, dietetics and health department, received the Excellence in Online Teaching Award. The award recognizes an online instructor or faculty member who has provided outstanding online teaching, course development, mentoring of students and service to the field of continuing education.

Rosenkranz uses a student-centered approach to teach online classes that capture and sustain student interest and engagement. Through the use of games and other interactive and adaptive teaching techniques, he provides challenging and rewarding educational experiences for distance students.

Karla Girard, distance program coordinator in the food, nutrition, dietetics and health department, received the Outstanding Advisor Award, given to a K-State faculty or staff member demonstrating exceptional efforts in assisting and advising distance students.

Girard was nominated by a distance student, one of many she advises through the online dietetics bachelor's degree program. She consistently helps students when issues arise, whether academic or personal in nature, finding resources or offering encouragement to ensure their success.

Greg Dressman, associate director of application infrastructure and integration for K-State's Office of Mediated Education, received the Friend of Global Campus Award for significant contributions to advance K-State Global Campus programs and services.

Dressman assisted the K-State Global Campus conferences and noncredit programs office with a new registration system that improved outreach efforts to K-State's nontraditional population. His technical expertise and communication streamlined the registration process for hundreds of conferences per year.

Caitlin Messer, a student employee in the K-State Global Campus administration and finance office, received the K-State Global Campus Star Student Award. The award recognizes a student employee who consistently goes above and beyond the requirements of their position to make meaningful and positive contributions to K-State Global Campus.

Messer is a senior from Soldier, Kansas, dual-majoring in accounting and English literature. In her four years at K-State Global Campus, she has consistently shown enthusiasm, resourcefulness, dependability and a positive attitude in the workplace.

Jo Maseberg-Tomlinson, program coordinator for K-State Global Campus, received the Lynda Spire Positive Focus Award. This award honors the positive leadership of Lynda Spire, retired assistant dean of K-State Global Campus.

Maseberg-Tomlinson oversees K-State's summer, intersession and evening courses and has played a large role in multiple award-winning projects and programs for K-State Global Campus. She is the first recipient of the award.
