Legislative update from Sue Peterson

Submitted by Sue Peterson

The Kansas Legislature adjourned early on the morning of May 2. The Legislature returns on June 1 for Sine Die to finish any remaining legislative business.

Prior to adjournment, the Legislature passed a revised fiscal year 2016 and fiscal year 2017 budget to Gov. Sam Brownback. In the next few weeks the governor will review the budget bill and make final decisions on the fiscal year budgets. The final budget included items for Kansas State University and higher education:

  1. Rename the budget line Kansas State Polytechnic Campus.
  2. Authorize the sale of property for the agronomy department.
  3. Removal of the cap on student tuition for fiscal year 2017.
  4. A proviso directing the governor in any future allotments to reduce the universities based on the funds adversely impacting the research universities — Kansas State and the University of Kansas.

Items related to the final budget can be found on the K-State Governmental Relations website. As usual, any comments or questions can be sent to kstategr@k-state.edu

A final legislative update will be provided after June 1.
