StrengthsQuest themes now in KSIS

Submitted by Jessica Arnold

To prepare for and enhance advising conversations with students, academic advisors can now access a student's top five strengths in the K-State Advisor Center in KSIS.

"It is vital that we recognize the importance of non-cognitive factors when advising or teaching, for all students but especially for first-generation students. It's also important to accentuate the positive, as it were; research shows time and again that even subtle recognition of 'strengths' can make a big difference. Many thanks to all who are helping to enhance K-State as a strengths-based campus," said Steven Dandaneau, vice provost for undergraduate studies.

In an effort to increase the retention, engagement and overall well-being of its students, Kansas State University has partnered with Gallup to become a strengths-based campus. This means all incoming freshmen, transfer, and international students who have attended orientation and enrollment at K-State have free access to the Clifton StrengthsFinder online assessment. The code is good for the first semester only.

The StrengthsFinder assessment, based on the concept of intentionally developing your strengths rather than your weaknesses, identifies students' top five strengths from a list of 34 talents. The assessment is utilized campuswide in classrooms and communities, as a way for students to better understand what they and others have to offer.
