Journalism and mass communications students score big at annual Kansas Association of Broadcasters awards

Students in the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications have been recognized by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters for their outstanding efforts in broadcast communication. In all, K-State featured 18 individual student winners in 18 separate entries.

Student entries were produced and aired on broadcast, cable, or webcast during the past calendar year. Entries were judged on excellence, believability, creativity and effectiveness. Kansas State University students recognized by the association this year:

Undergraduate-Radio

Tana Akers won second place for "ACIC PSA" in the 60-second commerical-PSA or noncommercial donor announcement category. 

Shawn Gelushia won first place for "The Shawn Gelushia Show" in the public affairs program category. 

Clarissa Weers won first place for "KSDB News Update 2-5-16," and Blane Worely won second place for "KSDB News Update 2-10-16" in the complete live newscast category. 

Alec Gartner won second place for "Sports Talk — Oct. 12" in the sportscast category. 

Blane Worley and Jeremy Ricci won first place for "This Week in History" in the entertainment program category. 

Ellen Collingwood won second place for the 91.9 Day Tailgate and Lindsay Rhodes received an honorable mention for KSDB Open House in the promotion event/activity category. 

Monica Birch won second place for the KSDB website in the station website category. 

Undergraduate-TV

Kaitlyn Heier won second place for "Channel 8 News — Dec. 1, 2015" in the complete live newscast category. 

Natalie Otto received an honorable mention for "Memorial Stadium Letter" in the complete news feature category. 

Avery Osen won second place for "Avery Osen Sports Report" in the Sportscast category. 

Natalie Otto won first place for "Natalie Otto Anchoring Newscast" and Avery Osen won second place for "Avery Osen News Anchor" in the DJ personality for radio or news anchor for TV category. 

Meagan Miller, Daniela Leon and Lindsay Rhoades won second place for "Trafficked into the Sex Industry" in the documentary category. 

Graduate/Radio

Erica Sponberg won first place for "What's Happening in Your World?" in the public affairs program category. 

Eric Nehm and Jordan Swoyer won first place for "Hip Hop and Hoops" in the entertainment program category. 

Intern-TV

Katherine Johnston won first place for "Convoy of Hope" in the complete news feature category. 

Winners will be recognized at the annual KAB Student Seminar luncheon on Tuesday, April 5, at Emporia State University. The seminar will include a full day of panels and round-table discussions to acquaint students with the future of broadcasting, career opportunities and the real world of broadcasting. A job fair for graduating college seniors will be available.
