Kat Chats: Students Helping Students

Submitted by Ellen Burke

Students and student leaders are in an ideal situation to identify the stressors that often negatively affect students. However many feel uncomfortable broaching the topic or are unsure how best to connect students to appropriate resources.

"At-Risk for College Students and Student Leaders" will take place from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in 13 Leasure Hall.

This session is an online interactive course that prepares users to recognize signs of psychological distress such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Users learn how to approach at-risk students and make appropriate referrals to campus support services for screening and assessment. Through role-play conversations with virtual students, learners attain hands-on practice managing challenging — and often sensitive — conversations surrounding mental health and master the skills necessary to identify and connect students to appropriate resources.
