Kansas Board of Regents January meeting agenda items

By Cindy Bontrager

The Kansas Board of Regents will meet on Jan. 20 at the Curtis State Office Building in Topeka. The board will consider the following agenda items during the meeting.

The Regents will act on a request for 10 additional courses to be recognized for transfer across the Kansas Board of Regents system. Currently 56 courses are approved for guaranteed transfer among all Kansas public postsecondary institutions. The courses recommended for approval are: biology 1 and lab for majors, engineering physics 1 and lab, engineering physics 2 and lab, general chemistry and lab for non-majors, introduction to criminal justice, introduction to mass communication, introduction to social work, personal and community health, personal finance and physical geology.

The Regents will act on amendments to the state university weapons possession policy. In developing the amended policy, campus groups were asked to review the proposed amendments and provide feedback. View the proposed policy. The 2013 Kansas Legislature enacted a statute to preclude state and municipal entities from prohibiting eligible individuals from the concealed carry of handguns in state and municipal buildings, except those buildings having adequate security measures, as defined by the statute, at all public entrances. The Regents, on behalf of the six state universities, acted to exempt all state university buildings for up to the maximum period allowed. This exemption period expires on July 1, 2017.

It is in the best interests of universities and campus communities to begin planning for 2017 implementation of the concealed carry law and Shane Bangerter, Board of Regents chair, has asked that university polices be submitted for board review by June 2016. K-State has formed a working group and is in the process of forming five subgroups to determine how best to implement the concealed carry statute on K-State campuses within the guidelines of the Regents' policy. Please contact the Vice President for Administration and Finance Office at 785-532-6226 or tarap@k-state.edu if you are interested in serving on a subgroup.

Sincerely,
