Engineering Extension group hosts grant-writing workshop in Germany

Submitted by Mary Rankin

Kristina Snyder and David Carter, program specialists in Kansas State University's Office of Engineering Extension, hosted 26 European students from 16 countries in Berlin, Germany, for a one-day, grant-writing workshop and networking event on Oct. 17. The group comprised nearly half of the 59 participants in the U.S Department of State's Summer Institute program hosted by Engineering Extension on the K-State campus and surrounding areas during the summers of 2013-2015.

The group used networking time to develop connections between participants from different summers of the program and among the diverse countries. Workshop time was spent developing grant proposals for nine projects covering a range of topics from training medical students as nurses in Sweden, to a film project aimed at diverting young people from joining gangs in the Niger Delta.

Students at the Berlin workshop also heard first-hand about the academic Fulbright program and its application process from a 2013 summer institute participant who is headed to the U.S. as a Fulbright student in 2016-2017. Funding for the workshop was provided through the Department of State, as well as through the International Global Learning Opportunities grant from the K-State Office of International Programs.
