National 4-H Week student feature: Anna Setter

Submitted by Katie Allen

For all members, present and past, 4-H will always hold a special place in their hearts. For these 4-H alumni, the program gave them important life skills that they plan to use for many years to come. Join K-State Research and Extension this week as we profile current students at Kansas State University who are former 4-H members, in celebration of National 4-H Week, Oct. 4-10.

Anna Setter, Humboldt, Kansas, Southwind Extension District

Anna Setter accredits 4-H for allowing her to explore many different career paths. As a sophomore dual majoring in food science and agricultural economics, Setter says she would not be where she is today without 4-H. She was a 12-year member of the Logan Pals 4-H Club, where she participated in projects such as foods and nutrition, photography and leadership. Discovering her passion for the food industry led Setter to pursue her ultimate "dream job" after obtaining her master's degree: developing curriculum and outreach education for children about agriculture and nutrition.

"Through being an active member in the food and nutrition project, I was able to explore my interest through various projects and opportunities, which is the driving force behind my interest in food science," Setter says. "As a freshman in high school, I participated in a class at 4-H Discovery Days about the Food Science Institute here at K-State and knew immediately it was what I wanted. 4-H helped me to find a place where I could fit in. The network of people that I had made from being a 4-H member made my transition to K-State a breeze. 4-H allowed my creative soul to flourish. There isn't a day that goes by where I am not reminded of something that I did or learned through the 4-H program."
