Submitted by Communications and Marketing

It was an award-winning showing by students and faculty from Kansas State University's biological and agricultural engineering department at the recent American Society of Biological and Agricultural Engineering International Meeting in New Orleans.

The K-Staters took many of the top awards in the publication and paper categories, as well as several other honors. Among the department's award recipients:

• Freddie Lamm, professor of biological and agricultural engineering and research irrigation engineer at the Northwest Research-Extension Center, was named a fellow of the American Society of Biological and Agricultural Engineering for his outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and experience in, or related to, the field of agricultural, food or biological systems engineering.

• Kseniya Sheshukova, junior in biological systems engineering, first place in the K.K. Barnes Student Paper category for undergraduate research with "Extraction Analysis of Recombinant Human Serum Albumin in Transgenic Rice Extracts." Sheshukova's adviser is Lisa Wilken, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering.

• Devin Mangus, May 2015 master's graduate in biological and agricultural engineering, Master Paper Award first-place honor from the Association of Agricultural, Food and Biological Engineers of Indian Origin and Boyd-Scott Graduate Research Award third-place honor, both for "Deploying a Thermal Infrared Imaging System for High Spatial and Temporal Resolution Crop Water Stress Monitoring of Corn within a Greenhouse." His adviser is Ajay Sharda, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering.

• Biological and agricultural engineering faculty members Dan Rogers, professor; Jonathan Aguilar, assistant professor, Southwest Area Research-Extension Center; Isaya Kisekka, assistant professor, Southwest Area Research-Extension Center; Phil Barnes, associate professor; and Lamm, American Society of Biological and Agricultural Engineering Blue Ribbon Award for outstanding extension publication for "Important Agricultural Soil Properties."

• Donghai Wang, professor of biological and agricultural engineering, Superior Paper Award in the research-processing systems category for "A Char-supported Nano-NiO Catalyst for Biomass Syngas Cleanup with Conditioning," which was co-authored with W. Yuan and A. Kumar.

• K-State Biological Systems Engineering Senior Design Team, first-place tie, Gunlogson Open Competition. Team members included Chloe Boudreaux, Jack Ezell, Kevin Garman and Phillip Mahoney. Adviser is Ed Brokesh, instructor of biological and agricultural engineering.

• K-State Biological Systems Engineering Club, first-place trophy from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers for as the Outstanding Student Engineering Branch.

• K-State Ag Technology Management Club, second-place trophy from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers for Outstanding Student Technology Branch.
