K-State bands present three nights of concerts

By Don Linn

The K-State band program will present three nights of concerts involving students in the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Wind Symphony, University Bands and Brass Ensemble.

The concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in McCain Auditorium with performances by the Wind Ensemble and the Wind Symphony. The groups are under the direction of Frank Tracz and Don Linn.

The Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band at Kansas State University and is fresh off its very successful performance at Carnigie Hall in New York City. Guest conducting on the concert will be graduate students Alex Wimmer, Emily Roth, Chris Johnson and Alex Cook. The concert also will feature guest conductor Bob Moews and members of the K-State faculty and community performing on the concert's finale. The bands will perform classic and contemporary works for band, including compositions by Alfred Reed, Robert Jager, Travis Cross as well classic works by Gabrieli, Mozart, and Richard Strauss.

The second concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 4, in McCain Auditorium with performances by the Concert Band and the University Bands.

The Concert Band is under the direction of graduate students Alex Wimmer, Emily Roth, Chris Johnson, Rachel Villareale, Alex Cook and Dan Haddad. The University Bands are directed by junior and senior music education students and are supervised by Tracz, Linn and the K-State bands graduate student staff. A wide variety of literature for large band and chamber ensembles will be performed.

The final concert in the series will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in McCain Auditorium. The concert will feature our Brass Ensemble performing powerful works by Copland, Husa, Nelhybel, and Stamp.

All of these concerts are free and open to the public. Come out and support the arts at K-State.
